Houston Estimate Stories and Field Tips
Short tips from the field. The newest ones show on the homepage for a week; all of them stay here. I’m an independent Xactimate estimator, not a public adjuster, and I don’t do the repairs myself.
- Your options
You don’t have to accept the adjuster’s number as the last word. It’s the insurer’s estimate. You can get your own itemized estimate to share with them.
Free estimate review - Hidden water
Water travels. Wet insulation, the bottom of cabinets and the wall cavity below a leak are easy to miss on a quick visit. Adjusters carry heavy caseloads, so a second look at the scope helps.
Read the field note - Matching
When only part of a floor or wall is replaced, the new material may not match what’s left. Whether matching items belong in the scope is worth a look.
Free estimate review - Haul-off
Demolition creates debris. Removal, haul-off and dump fees are real costs that are sometimes left out of a first estimate.
Free estimate review - Mitigation
Before rebuilding, confirm drying is finished and documented. Field note: check the mitigation first.
